Jirania Fencidil Scandal: International Drug Kingpin Saurabh Tyagi Arrested and Brought to Tripura!

Agartala: The Crime Branch of the Tripura Police has finally achieved a major breakthrough in the case involving the seizure of a huge consignment of illegal cough syrup (Fencidil) in Jirania. Saurabh Tyagi, a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and a key mastermind behind the inter-state and international drug syndicate, has been arrested and brought to the state.

A special team from the Uttar Pradesh Police brought him to Agartala by train this Saturday morning. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court of West District has ordered the accused, Saurabh Tyagi, to be held in judicial custody for two days. He will be produced before the court again next Monday. The Crime Branch had sought a ten-day remand.

In October, a joint operation by the Police and Assam Rifles at Jirania Railway Station resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,07,800 bottles of the banned cough syrup from two bogies of a goods train. Saurabh Tyagi is the fifth person arrested in this case. Earlier, Rajiv Dasgupta, Arun Kumar Ghosh, Mantanu Saha, and Himanshu Jha (a resident of Delhi) were apprehended.

The Crime Branch investigation has revealed sensational facts:

  • Arun Kumar Ghosh had booked the Fencidil bogie in Delhi.
  • However, the main planner and distributor for selling this massive quantity of Fencidil to drug traffickers across various states, including Tripura, was Saurabh Tyagi.
  • According to police sources, Saurabh Tyagi is considered a ‘big name’ in the drug business in India. There are multiple cases filed against him in various police stations, including Barasat and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Significantly, this syndicate was also manufacturing and selling counterfeit Fencidil, which has led to many people falling ill.

Coordination and Negotiation with UP Police

Saurabh Tyagi was initially arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police on November 4th. Following this, Inspector Sukanta Sen Choudhury of the Tripura Crime Branch was sent to Uttar Pradesh. He interrogated Saurabh while he was in UP Police custody and uncovered a lot of explosive information.

Although the UP Police were initially reluctant to hand over the notorious trafficker to the Tripura Police—as he is equally important to their investigations—a final arrangement was made. He was brought to Tripura under the supervision of a special UP Police team. Police sources indicate that the UP Police team will remain in the state and conduct parallel interrogations for as long as Saurabh Tyagi is in the custody of the Tripura Police. He will be taken back to Uttar Pradesh once the proceedings in Tripura are concluded.

More Suspects on the Run

In connection with the Jirania Fencidil case, Apu Ranjan Das of Boxnagar remains absconding. Furthermore, the Crime Branch is keeping a close watch on several other drug traffickers in the areas of Bhattapukur, Gandhigram, and Maharajganj Bazar. Efforts are underway to arrest them quickly, as confirmed by police sources.

With this arrest, observers believe the police have taken a significant step forward in dismantling the drug network in Tripura.
