Agartala, Friday: The Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Biswabandhu Sen, passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He had been suffering from a prolonged illness for several months. His demise has cast a pall of gloom across the state’s political and public life.
Biswabandhu Sen, a former Congress leader who later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was serving as the 11th Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly since June 21, 2018. A four-time MLA from the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura district, Sen was widely respected for his calm disposition, administrative competence, and steadfast adherence to parliamentary traditions.
Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed deep grief over the Speaker’s passing and extended condolences to the bereaved family. In a message shared on social media, the Chief Minister described Sen’s death as an irreparable loss to the state.
“This untimely demise is an irreparable loss for Tripura. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and followers. I pray to the Almighty for the eternal peace of the departed soul and for strength to the family to overcome this difficult time,” the Chief Minister said.
Leaders from across party lines, fellow legislators, and citizens have also expressed shock and sorrow at the passing of Biswabandhu Sen, remembering him as a disciplined lawmaker and a dignified Speaker who consistently upheld the sanctity and decorum of the House.
