AGARTALA | UPDATED: JAN 5, 2026

In a major development in the state’s political landscape, Youth Congress leader Shahjahan Islam was arrested on Monday after surrendering at the West Agartala Police Station. Islam had been evading arrest for nearly seven months in connection with a high-profile case involving alleged derogatory social media remarks directed at Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.

The Case Background

The controversy erupted on the night of June 8, 2025, when Islam reportedly posted objectionable content on social media targeting the Chief Minister. The post quickly went viral, sparking a firestorm of political backlash and leading to a night of unrest. Following the post, a group of BJP supporters allegedly attacked Islam’s residence in Shantipara, resulting in clashes that gripped the local area with tension.

While cross-complaints were filed by both parties at the time, leading to the arrest of Islam’s father and brother (who were later released on bail), Shahjahan Islam remained at large.

  • Supreme Court Intervention: Earlier, Islam had moved the Supreme Court seeking protection from arrest. The apex court had directed him to surrender by a specific deadline in January.
  • The Surrender: Despite missing the initial court-mandated window, Islam appeared at the West Police Station on Monday to turn himself in.

Official Statement

Speaking to the press, SDPO Devaprasad Roy confirmed the arrest, stating that the charges against the Youth Congress leader extend beyond the social media post.

“Shahjahan Islam has been taken into custody for making obscene and highly objectionable comments against the Hon’ble Chief Minister. Furthermore, the investigation has uncovered evidence of signature forgery. We have collected sufficient material to proceed with the charges,” the SDPO informed reporters.

The arrest has reignited debates over the “responsible use of social media” and the escalating political friction in the state. Islam is expected to be produced before the court shortly as police continue their investigation into the forgery allegations.
